Milk DVD
"His life
changed history. His courage changed lives." MILK, directed by Gus Van Sant in
2008, is an extraordinary film about gay rights and activist Harvey Milk, San
Francisco's city supervisor. Harvey Milk, who moves from New York with his
boyfriend to San Francisco around his 40th birthday, opens up a camera shop
which becomes a salon for the gay community. Believing that by being in the
office he could spread the word of the gay community, Milk eventually turns his
activism into politic activism and runs for office with his lover Scott Smith.
After several elections, in 1977 Milk becomes the first gay man to have a
supervisor seat in the U.S. and San Francisco. Fellow supervisor Dan White finds
it hard to keep a political relationship with Milk since their views are so
different. Milk doesn't support White when White wishes to forestall a
psychiatric hospital from opening, so White begins to vote against gay rights.
On November 7, 1978, White resigns from his position when Proposition 6 passes,
allowing gays to work in public schools in California. Twenty days later, White,
enraged over the ordeal, shoots Milk. As the movie ends, candles are seen
flashing down the streets of San Francisco as Milk's followers and supports
mourn.
